Fouriesburg
was proclaimed the capital of the Free State during the Anglo Boer
war since the state president Steyn stayed here for a while. The
town is also known for its sandstone buildings.
Surrender
Hill is a memorial to the fallen British soldiers and Boers. Four
thousand boers surrendered here and the majority were sent to India
as prisoners of war. The Surrender Hill marathon takes place on
the last Saturday in February and serves as a qualifier for the
Comrades' marathon.
The
largest sandstone overhang in the Southern Hemisphere, Salpeterkrans,
is still used for ancestral worship by local tribes.
The
district is very rich in Bushman rock art and various sites can
be visited. One of these is at the Wyndford farm.
Fouriesburg
is a convenient base to visit the Ficksburg Cherry Festival in November.
The
Eastern Free State is the ideal place for abseiling and rock climbing.
Various 4x4 routes challenge drivers and quid biking ads to the
menu for adventurers. A variety of hiking trails are also popular.
